What Are the Five Elements?
The Five Elements (Wu Xing, 五行) — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water — are fundamental to Chinese philosophy, medicine, and astrology. They describe how everything in the universe interacts and transforms.
The Five Elements
🌳 Wood (木) — Growth, creativity, flexibility. Wood people are ambitious, generous, and idealistic.
🔥 Fire (火) — Passion, energy, transformation. Fire people are charismatic, adventurous, and enthusiastic.
⛰️ Earth (土) — Stability, nurturing, patience. Earth people are reliable, practical, and grounded.
⚙️ Metal (金) — Structure, discipline, determination. Metal people are organized, principled, and strong-willed.
💧 Water (水) — Wisdom, intuition, adaptability. Water people are deep thinkers, creative, and diplomatic.
Generating & Overcoming Cycles
The elements interact in two main cycles:
- Generating (生): Wood → Fire → Earth → Metal → Water → Wood
- Overcoming (克): Wood → Earth → Water → Fire → Metal → Wood
Did You Know?
- The Five Elements combine with the 12 zodiac animals to create a 60-year cycle — that's why each animal year also has an element (e.g., 2024 is the Year of the Wood Dragon).
- Each element has both Yin and Yang forms, creating 10 Heavenly Stems that rotate with the 12 Earthly Branches.
- Traditional Chinese medicine uses the Five Elements to understand health and balance in the body.
