Before paper, knowledge was heavy. In the West, scribes scratched letters onto clay tablets or scraped the skins of sheep and calves to make parchment — a single Bible required the hides of approximately 300 animals. In China, scholars wrote on bamboo slips tied together with cords, and a single book could fill a cart. The famous philosopher Zhuangzi once joked that the books of his day were so heavy that "those who read them develop strong muscles." Knowledge was literally weighed down by its medium.
Then, in 105 CE, a Chinese court official named Cai Lun presented something revolutionary to Emperor He of the Han dynasty: sheets of a thin, smooth, lightweight material made from mulberry bark, hemp, rags, and fishing nets. He called it paper. It would change everything.
Before Paper: The World of Bamboo and Silk
To understand the magnitude of the paper revolution, we must appreciate what came before. Chinese civilization had already developed a sophisticated writing system by the Shang dynasty (c. 1600–1046 BCE), but writing materials were profoundly limiting. Oracle bones — turtle plastrons and ox scapulae — were used for divination, not for recording literature or history. Bronze vessels carried permanent inscriptions, but they were expensive and their surface area was tiny.
By the Zhou dynasty (c. 1046–256 BCE), the standard writing material was bamboo slips (jian, 简). Strips of bamboo or wood were shaved flat, written on with brush and ink, and bound together with silk or leather cords to form a scroll. This system worked, but it was cumbersome. A single bamboo slip held perhaps 30 characters; a substantial text required hundreds or thousands of slips. When the First Emperor of Qin unified China in 221 BCE, he reportedly had to process documents weighing over 120 pounds every day.
Silk offered a luxurious alternative. Light, smooth, and durable, silk was ideal for writing and painting. But silk was ruinously expensive — far too costly for everyday record-keeping or the mass production of books. It was the medium of emperors and aristocrats, not of scholars or merchants. What China needed was something cheap, light, and abundant. What it needed was paper.
Cai Lun and the Invention of Paper
Cai Lun (蔡伦, c. 50–121 CE) was a eunuch official in the Han imperial court, serving as the director of the imperial workshops. The traditional account, recorded in the Book of the Later Han, states that in 105 CE he reported to the emperor that he had successfully manufactured paper from tree bark, hemp, old rags, and discarded fishing nets. The emperor was pleased, and paper quickly spread throughout the empire.
But Cai Lun almost certainly did not "invent" paper from nothing. Archaeological discoveries have pushed the date of the earliest paper back by at least two centuries. Fragments of hemp paper found in a tomb at Fangmatan, Gansu province, date to the early Western Han period (c. 179–141 BCE). Other early paper specimens have been found at various sites along the Silk Road. What Cai Lun did — and why he is rightly honored — was to standardize and improve the papermaking process, using a wider range of raw materials and producing paper of consistent quality suitable for writing.
Cai Lun's basic process remains recognizable in papermaking to this day. Raw materials were soaked, pounded into a pulp, suspended in water, and then lifted out on a screen. The water drained away, leaving a thin mat of fibers that, when dried and pressed, became a sheet of paper. It was simple in principle but required considerable skill to execute well. The Chinese refined the process over centuries, experimenting with different fibers, sizing agents (to control absorbency), and finishing techniques.
Woodblock Printing: The First Information Revolution
Paper alone would not have transformed civilization. The real revolution came when paper met printing. The Chinese invented woodblock printing — the earliest known form of printing anywhere in the world — during the Tang dynasty (618–907 CE). The principle was straightforward: carve a page of text in reverse onto a wooden block, apply ink to the raised surface, press paper against it, and peel off a printed page. A single block could produce thousands of copies.
The earliest surviving printed book is the Diamond Sutra (金刚经), a Buddhist scripture printed in 868 CE and discovered in 1907 by the archaeologist Aurel Stein in the Mogao Caves near Dunhuang. The frontispiece is a beautifully detailed woodcut showing the Buddha preaching to disciples, and the colophon states that it was made "for universal free distribution" by a man named Wang Jie on behalf of his parents. The solution was movable type — individual characters that could be rearranged to print any text. This was the insight of Bi Sheng (毕昇, 990–1051 CE), a commoner about whom we know almost nothing except that he invented movable type during the Qingli reign (1041–1048) of the Song dynasty.
Bi Sheng's system used ceramic type: individual characters carved in relief on clay, then fired hard. To print, he set the characters in an iron frame filled with a warm mixture of pine resin, wax, and paper ash. The mixture held the type in place while printing; when reheated, it released the type for reuse. Bi Sheng prepared multiple copies of common characters and stored his thousands of pieces of type in wooden cases organized by rhyme group.
The great Song dynasty scientist Shen Kuo (沈括) recorded Bi Sheng's invention in his encyclopedia Dream Pool Essays (梦溪笔谈, 1088 CE), which is why we know about it at all. Shen noted that Bi Sheng's movable type was "extremely convenient" for printing hundreds or thousands of copies, but acknowledged that for short print runs, woodblock was still more practical. This is a crucial point: movable type was not necessarily superior to woodblock in the Chinese context, where a set of woodblocks could be stored and reused for centuries.
Later Chinese innovators experimented with other materials. During the Yuan dynasty (1271–1368), Wang Zhen developed wooden movable type and invented a revolving table for typesetters. The Ming and Qing dynasties saw experiments with copper movable type, culminating in the printing of the enormous Imperial Encyclopedia (古今图书集成) in 1726 using bronze type. But woodblock printing remained the dominant technology in China until the 19th century, when Western printing presses were introduced.
The Spread to the West
Paper and printing did not remain Chinese secrets for long. Papermaking spread along the Silk Road: to Central Asia by the 8th century, to the Islamic world by the 9th, and to Europe by the 12th. The pivotal moment came at the Battle of Talas in 751 CE, when Arab forces defeated a Tang Chinese army in what is now Kyrgyzstan. Among the prisoners taken were Chinese papermakers, who taught their craft to their captors. The first paper mill in the Islamic world was established in Samarkand soon after, and the technology spread rapidly to Baghdad, Damascus, and Cairo.
Europe was the last major civilization to acquire paper. The first European paper mills appeared in Spain and Italy in the 12th and 13th centuries, using technology transmitted through the Islamic world. Paper was cheaper than parchment, more abundant, and better suited to the printing press that Johannes Gutenberg would develop in the 1440s. It is no exaggeration to say that without Chinese paper, Gutenberg's revolution would have been impossible — or at least far less consequential. The books that spread the Renaissance, the Reformation, and the Scientific Revolution were printed on a Chinese invention.
Whether Gutenberg knew of Chinese movable type is a matter of scholarly debate. Some argue that knowledge of Bi Sheng's invention could have traveled westward along trade routes; others maintain that Gutenberg developed his system independently. What is certain is that the Chinese had solved the fundamental problems of printing — carving text in relief, applying ink, pressing paper — centuries before Gutenberg was born.
The Diamond Sutra and the Legacy of Chinese Printing
The Diamond Sutra, that humble scroll printed in 868 CE, now resides in the British Library. It is fragile, incomplete at the edges, and bears the stains of centuries. But it represents something monumental: the moment when humanity first harnessed the power of mechanical reproduction to spread ideas. Everything that followed — the Gutenberg Bible, the scientific journal, the paperback novel, the morning newspaper, the digital text you are reading now — traces its lineage back to that moment in Tang dynasty China when someone carved a block of wood with a sacred text and pressed it onto paper.
The Chinese inventions of paper and printing democratized knowledge. They made books affordable, literacy attainable, and ideas portable. They are, by any measure, among the most consequential technologies ever created.
